Job Title - Senior Telecoms Consultant

Atkins Transportation is currently expanding our team of Railway Technology Consultants. We are looking for proactive, self-motivated and personable professionals that are enthusiastic and, ideally, have experience in applying consultancy solutions in railway technology environments. The successful applicant will be expected to have broad technical engineering experience and IP Network and Telecommunications expertise. Whilst some experience in rail and mass transit engineering projects would be advantageous it is not essential.

The applicant will be expected to possess excellent written and verbal communication skills for client-facing roles that will have significant exposure to key stakeholders. They will be highly motivated to deliver to client’s expectations and accustomed to working as part of a team, whilst also being able to act on initiative and, when necessary, occasionally working alone.

Responsibilities will include preparation of bids, acting as project manager / engineer and leading a range of tasks with minimal supervision. Potential projects involve advising and supporting clients in the evaluation and deployment of technology on the mainline rail network and mass transit systems both within the UK and internationally. Our dynamic team assists public sector organisations in a wide number of activities, across the life cycle of a project. Typically, these include:

> Business case development, requirements capture and specification design
> Project and programme management, dealing with stakeholders and risk & change management
> System procurement including reviewing and assessing contractor proposals
> Client Technical Advisor during the delivery phases of project, ensuring contractors deliver to their contractual requirements
> Research and feasibility studies into new and emerging technologies
> Economic appraisal and evaluation of technology schemes

The role involves supporting clients across this range of activities on small, medium and large projects.

Requirements

> HNC / Degree (or equivalent) and / or significant relevant professional experience with membership of a relevant technical body, preferably with Chartered status.
> Experience of delivering consultancy projects and technology solutions preferably in a Railway related environment
> Flexibility to support different roles on projects including technical and advisory roles
> Understanding of complex issues and capture client and system requirements
> Ability to deliver assignments within tight time constraints
> Ability to work as part of a team in a multi-discipline environment
> An awareness of project risks and how to manage them, including health and safety
> Client focus and ability to develop effective relationships with clients
> Ability to manage time across multiple projects for various clients
> Proven ability to learn new skills and understand complex technical projects rapidly
> Excellent problem solving skills and able to develop new and innovative ideas
> Ability to contribute to business development through client relationships and bids
> The capability to discuss, design and develop advanced network concepts, routing, security and IP architectures in both IPv4 and IPv6 environments.

Excellent knowledge and experience of IP network principles, technologies and services, including:

> Advanced knowledge of network design concept and principles
> Routing, Switching, and Wireless circuit technologies
> IP backbone, IP backhaul design and implementation
> Network Security Technologies
> Experience of integrating and consolidating medium and large scale network infrastructures

In addition, it would be advantageous to have experience in any, or all, of the following:

> IP Telephony and VoIP Systems
> Customer Information Systems
> Digital Radio Systems and Cellular mobile networks
> CCTV and Access Control Systems

Responsibilities

> Delivery of innovative client solutions for Railway Systems Technology Consultancy projects
> Undertaking appropriate technical leadership and delivery within projects to ensure client satisfaction
> Preparation of a brief, working to that brief and delivery of study reports, working papers and specifications
> Task management on projects
> Implementing measures to ensure design quality and assurance of design projects
> Supporting other team members in multidisciplinary engineering projects
> Mentoring and training junior members and apprentices
> Effective management of the delivery of work to standards and procedures (internal and client)
> Actively seeking, reporting and developing prospective opportunities to grow client accounts
> Liaising with clients to discuss all aspects of existing and future projects
> Identification and development of bids to clients
> Preparation of cost estimates and scopes
