Atkins are seeking candidates with the drive and skills necessary to manage, co-ordinate and most importantly lead the technical delivery of a wide range of multi-disciplinary railway infrastructure engineering projects within our Transportation Division. These include schemes like HS2, East West Rail and Digital Railway, to name but a few.

We are interested in engineers from either civil, electrical, track, signalling or mechanical backgrounds who have a proven track record within the railway industry. Depending on the candidate this could mean strong design, project or engineering design management.

Individuals working within this area of Atkins are responsible for leading and implementing all types of rail projects including multidisciplinary enhancement schemes, high speed, technology implementation, system engineering, bridges, railway buildings and platforms, electrification, resignalling schemes and level crossings.

Your responsibilities are likely to include:-
• Leadership, supervision and preparation of engineering work for all types of rail engineering projects through the full range of Network Rail GRIP stages (HS2,TfL/LU/RIBA equivalents);
• Primarily leading delivery of GRIP1-5 design packages on behalf of Network Rail and Contractors on a design and build basis, although this may extend to GRIP6-8 on schemes where Atkins is the Principal Implementation Contractor, should experience suffice;
• Undertaking the role of Contractor’s Engineering Manager (CEM) on a range of projects;
• Undertaking the Atkins role of Project Technical Leader on projects;
• Maintaining a comprehensive understanding of relevant safety, standards and regulations associated with the UK rail sector. Leadership of CSM/CDM requirements;
• Creating a cohesive design team including local, national & international resources;
• Ensure successful delivery of projects by co-ordinating cross-discipline interfaces;
• Utilisation of systems engineering approaches to delivery assurance;
• Meeting cost and time targets and having an input to these;
• Building and maintaining close working relationships with our clients;
• Preparation of pre-qualification responses, proposals and tenders;
• Undertaking Technical Reviewer roles on projects which is an independent technical review role;
• Development of key client relationships which may be outside the immediate contacts within a given project;
• Contribution to division or business wide improvement and innovation activities which may be interest areas of the candidate or required by Atkins; and
• Possible requirement to undertake formal mentorship for those progressing to Chartership status with their relevant discipline institute.


Essential Requirements

Suitable candidates will possess the following qualifications and experience:-
• Proven experience of multi-disciplinary railway project Design and Construction; with particular emphasis on the management and co-ordination of design activities;
• Undertaken the role of CEM on a range of Network Rail projects;
• Proven ability to interface with internal and external design teams and clients alike;
• Engineering or other relevant numerate degree qualification
• Chartered or Incorporated Status within your core engineering discipline (civil / electrical / mechanical)
• Ability to work within a design team, both locally, nationally & internationally;
• Demonstrable experience delivering projects within the rail industry;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills at all levels within project teams;
• A proven track record of working closely with Design & Build contractors on a range of railway infrastructure works would be highly desirable;
• Experience of leading technical responses to pre-qualification responses, proposals and tenders, including pricing elements; and
• Ability and willingness to mentor and support more junior colleagues in technical engineering design excellence; and

Additional Information
• Travel to other sites and company offices may be necessary, including our Global Design resources in India
• Out of working hours site visits may be required
