Shape an exceptional future for Essex’s new communities

As one of the largest and most ambitious local authorities, Essex County Council can offer an exceptional career path. Home to two million residents, we are passionate about shaping a great quality of life for our diverse communities, regardless of their backgrounds or what they hope to achieve in the long-term. We are constantly looking to the future to anticipate the needs of our local people, and with exciting plans to make provision for new communities, we are in need of your expert input.

Join our Sustainable Growth leadership team, and you will have the freedom to explore partnership-working across a broad array of ambitious projects. Taking responsibility for the future transport strategies relating to new communities and major community change projects, you will envisage how our local population will travel around, plus to and from these dynamic new communities that are being proposed. Addressing emerging local priority areas and network capacity enhancements such as HIF schemes, you will see to it that your initiatives are in-line with our commitment to sustainable travel (including rapid transport), generating commercial and digital solutions that will enhance our economy, and meet our infrastructure needs. From shaping business cases for these changes through to securing investment and ensuring your concepts are financially viable, you will champion urban design that will discourage private car use and address the evolving needs of our local population.

This is a far-reaching role that will see you touching on everything from behaviour change through to housing-related outcomes. We will therefore expect you to have significant post-qualification experience in land use and transport planning. You will also have:
• A comprehensive knowledge of emerging trends in innovation across transport, gained while developing and implementing statutory transport plans.
• Exceptional communication, influencing and leadership skills, with the capacity to inspire great results from your team.
• Good commercial and financial awareness, with the ability to best use resources to unlock creative opportunities.

Join our team, and you will find colleagues who are uniquely receptive to new ways of thinking. As with many local authorities, we recently faced the challenge of tighter resources – but we used that moment in time to shape better ways of working that would deliver enhanced value-for-money. This bold movement resulted in a progressive team ethos in which change is welcomed, and as such, you will find that colleagues are open to new ideas, and partnership-working is actively embraced.

When you join this forward-thinking team, you will find a dynamic workplace that is uniquely committed to employee satisfaction. We know that our workforce are the heart of what we are striving to achieve, so our bold People Plan underpins all that we do. As such, we support our people with learning and development opportunities, regardless of what stage they are at in their career, so you will be encouraged to explore our leadership development programme – plus you will have plenty of backing from other members of the senior leadership team. You will also have access to a flexible benefits package, comprehensive wellness support and a great work/life balance – all offset by the chance to do something truly great with your knowledge.
