Job Title - Principal Electrical Systems Engineer

Atkins are playing a key part in resignalling and electrifying the UK railway network. For example, we are delivering large resignalling schemes across England and we are the designers for over two thirds of the route kilometres covered by the UK National Electrification Programme.

We are seeking an experienced rail professional to act in the role of Principal Electrical Systems Engineer within our Transportation Business. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise on HV earthing and bonding and stray current control issues in the rail environment.

This role can be based at our offices in Derby, York or Croydon.

• Developing & delivering HV earthing and bonding & electrical systems integration consultancy services both within the Atkins Rail business and in Atkins’ other business in the UK and around the world.
• Carrying out studies to support the outline, detailed design, installation, test & commissioning phases of projects.
• Ensuring that proposed solutions are compliant with relevant local, national & international standards & regulations.
• Developing and fostering contacts with a view to generating your own revenue streams in the future.
• Working autonomously as well as part of a team.
• Preparing and/or delivering presentations.
• Capturing and managing change & supporting new work bidding activities.
• Proactively resolving design and installation issues.
• Being competent to act as CRE for Earthing and Bonding and Stray Current works.
• Engaging regularly with key stakeholders including design teams, delivery partners, clients and other Atkins businesses at all levels.
• Mentoring and assistance with the development of junior team members.
• Maintaining a good understand of Atkins business standards of safety, quality and design.

Requirements

We are looking for an individual with a proven track record in UK rail project delivery and a good understanding of how to integrate railway disciplines. The candidate should have drive and enthusiasm with good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team. Additionally the successful candidate will have a flexible approach to work and be prepared to travel to project and design offices at a number of locations within the UK.

The Individual

Essential
• Technical – a chartered engineer with significant experience of the railway environment. The ability to apply technical knowledge in analysing problems and creating solutions, demonstrating attention to detail and a track record of making correct judgements when interfacing disciplines. Honours Degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics. Good understanding of HV earthing & bonding, stray current control, and related system engineering principals in the railway industry Thorough understanding of national and international Earthing and Bonding regulations & standards and best practice. Practical experience of resolving HV Earthing and Bonding issues at later design and construction stages.
• Integration – understand systems engineering principles and how railway disciplines relate in forming part of the overall railway system.
• Detail - Have an eye for detail, be able to work to time constrained deadlines and work within a team environment.
• Innovation – has vision and is able to identify opportunities to innovate.
• Relationship building - a skilled and confident networker with the ability to build relationships and develop opportunities both internally and externally. Be equally comfortable working within an Atkins office as well as within our client’s premises or project offices.

Desirable

• Further Degree.
• Experience of engineering hazard identification and project risk assessment.
• Good understanding of regulatory frameworks such as CDM regulations, ROGs, CSM etc.
• Experience in simulation and modelling tools such as CDEGS/VISION OSLO/ Mathcad/MATLAB/PSPICE.
• Experience of bidding, planning and providing cost, change and budgetary control and monitoring.
• Experience of traction system design and simulation.
• Experience E&B in other sectors e.g. Power Industry.
