Atkins’ Transportation business is currently expanding our team of Transport Technology Consultants within the Network Operations and Technology Practice. With government investment expected, we are looking for experienced professionals that have enthusiasm and experience in applying consultancy solutions in a transport technology context.

The role is based in Epsom, which has good transport links to central London and is also conveniently situated for easy access to the M25 motorway and is therefore accessible from other parts of the South East. Epsom is a key location for Atkins staff with more staff working here than any of the other UK locations. As such it offers many opportunities for connecting with colleagues from other disciplines in different sectors both in work and through social and sports activities outside.

The role involves supporting clients across this range of activities on small, medium and large projects.

The team is currently helping a major public sector client deliver a large programme of work which involves optimising the performance of junctions on the strategic network through collaborative working with key stakeholders and the implementation of new traffic management systems. We are looking for individuals to help deliver some of the projects

Your responsibilities will include preparation of bids, acting as project manager and leading suitable tasks with minimal supervision. Projects involve advising and supporting clients in the deployment of technology on the road network and associated control centres. Our team assists public sector organisations in a wide number of activities, across the life cycle of a project. Typically, these include:

• Business case development, requirements capture and specification design
• Project and programme management, dealing with stakeholders and risk & change management
• System procurement including reviewing and assessing contractor proposals
• Research and feasibility studies into new technologies including connected and autonomous vehicles
• Calibration and optimisation of network management systems, e.g. traffic signals, ramp metering, smart motorways
• Economic appraisal and evaluation of technology schemes

Requirements

• Degree (or equivalent) and relevant professional qualification (or potential to apply)
• Some experience of delivering consultancy projects and technology solutions in a transport related environment
• Flexibility to support different roles on projects including project management, technical and advisory roles
• Understanding of complex issues and capture client and system requirements
• Ability to deliver assignments within tight time constraints
• An understanding of commercial constraints and how they affect consultancy and client projects
• Ability to work as part of a team in a multi-discipline environment
• An awareness of project risks and how to manage them, including health and safety
• Client focus and ability to develop effective relationships with clients
• Ability to manage time across multiple projects for various clients
• Proven ability to learn new skills and understand complex technical projects rapidly
• Excellent problem solving skills and able to develop new and innovative ideas
• Ability to contribute to business development through client relationships and bids

Responsibilities

• Delivery of innovative client solutions for Network Operations and Transport Technology Consultancy projects
• Preparation of project scopes and bids and delivery of study reports, working papers and specifications
• Project management of multiple small / medium sized projects for multiple clients
• Task management on large projects
• Effective management of the delivery of work to standards and procedures (internal and client)
• Proactively seeking, reporting and developing prospective opportunities to grow client accounts
• Liaison with clients with the ability to discuss all aspects of existing and future projects
• Identification and development of opportunities and bids for clients
• Preparation of cost estimates and scopes
• Management of staff, including conducting performance reviews and management of team productivity against targets
