Storey and Everitt re-appointed as Greater Manchester commissioners

Greater Manchester’s new Mayor Bev Craig has announced that Vernon Everitt will continue as the city region’s Transport Commissioner while Dame Sarah Storey will stay on as Active Travel Commissioner.

Labour’s Bev Craig took over from Andy Burnham after winning the Greater Manchester Combined Authority Mayoral Election at the end of last month.

Burnham stood down as Mayor after winning the Makerfield by-election in June to return to the House of Common, and subsquently became prime minister on 20 July.

Craig said the city region’s commissioners have played a central role in helping to deliver the Bee Network, the city region’s joined-up public transport and active travel system.

“Vernon and Sarah have been such driving forces behind the success of the Bee Network to date,” said Craig. “Together, they’ve helped deliver major progress toward our goal of creating the joined-up public transport system that the communities of Greater Manchester deserve.

“I’m committed to going even further - growing the Bee Network to better connect people to jobs, services, friends and family.”

There were over 700 million active travel trips taken in 2025 thanks to major investment in the Bee Network, including in pedestrian and cycle-friendly road infrastructure and new School Streets, said Transport for Greater Manchester. Work with community groups on initiatives such as bike libraries and accessible bikes have also encouraged more people to cycle, as well as the successful Starling cycle hire scheme, it added.
