South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive has appointed Tim Taylor to the new position of director of customer services. He joins next month from Working Links where he is head of customer services. SYPTE is currently strengthening its top management team – it was interviewing for a director of public transport this week.
Melanie Watson has left Transport for Greater Manchester after 11 years to set up her own consultancy business, MW Associates PTS Ltd. Watson delivered the Quality Bus Corridors programme for Greater Manchester PTE (the forerunner to TfGM), followed by operational management of the bus & rail contract teams, data collection and analysis teams. She developed and delivered TfGM’s bus partnership with operators and played a leading role in the early development of bus franchising. She leaves following her relocation to the south-west of England.
Mark Thurston (pictured) has been appointed the new chief executive officer of HS2 Ltd, succeeding Simon Kirby who left last year to join Rolls Royce. Thurston is currently regional managing director of consultant CH2M’s European operations, which includes those in the UK. He has worked for the Nichols Group, Metronet, and joined CH2M in 2008, where he has worked on the Olympics and Crossrail. He will take up his new position this spring.
Phil Verster has been appointed managing director of the Government’s East West Rail project to build a railway between Oxford and Cambridge. He will report to recently appointed project chair Rob Brighouse. Verster was managing director of the ScotRail Alliance, the ‘deep alliance’ between Network Rail and ScotRail franchise holder Abellio. Alex Hynes has been appointed Verster’s replacement in Scotland. He is currently managing director of Arriva Rail North. Welcoming Hynes’ appointment, Mark Carne, chief executive of Network Rail said the ScotRail Alliance was “one of the most pressurised, high profile roles in the whole railway industry”.
Andrew McGuinness has joined the Confederation of Passenger Transport as regional manager for the Northern and Yorkshire regions. He moves from Nexus where he was community relations officer. He succeeds Steve Noble (Northern) and Keith McNally (Yorkshire).
Tobyn Hughes, managing director of transport operations for the North East Combined Authority, has been appointed the new chair of the Urban Transport Group on a two-year term. He succeeds Jon Lamonte, chief executive of Transport for Greater Manchester.
