The London boroughs of Kingston and Sutton have come together to create an ambitious and forward-looking shared environment service, covering Environmental Regulatory Services and Highways & Transport functions. With a focus on delivering high quality frontline services, this innovative partnership plays its role in creating sustainable communities, with diverse transport networks and quality environments for all to enjoy. We offer a series of unique, fulfilling and exciting challenges in a dynamic working environment where innovation and creativity is needed just as much as the energy and desire to get things done.

This high-profile role covers overall responsibility for the Sustainable Transport team whose aim is to develop and deliver schemes and initiatives to promote sustainable transport and to fulfil statutory obligations under the Road Safety Act. Specific activities include cycle skills training, working with schools and businesses to reduce the negative impact of traffic on their operations and promoting and encouraging cycling, walking, car sharing, car clubs, electric vehicles and use of public transport. The team also manages the School Crossing Patrol service.

We’re looking for someone with proven experience of successful leadership, change management and performance monitoring within a similarly large and complex organisation. Previous experience in a similar role within a local authority and an understanding of local government would be advantageous.

In this role you will be required to attend committee meetings, advise customers and internal stakeholders, including directors and elected members, and be expected to deal with complex situations. Strong verbal and written communication and delivery skills are essential. You’ll be strategic in your approach and delivery and seek innovative ways to deliver services in line with the strategic visions of both Sutton and Kingston.

As part of this role sits within the Shared Environment Service for Kingston and Sutton Councils, you will be required to work from both locations and the role may require travel around both boroughs.
Finding the right people is critical to our future success. We’re looking for people who combine enthusiasm, drive and creativity with a successful track record of delivering high quality transport solutions in a local authority environment, whether working in the public sector or private practice.

For all roles your work with us will help ensure our highways and transport infrastructure is safe, fit for purpose, sustainable, cost effective and well connected. So, you’ll need to have good communication skills with the ability to put your ideas across clearly to colleagues and customers - both in person and in writing, and you’ll need to demonstrate the ability to manage and prioritise your workload effectively in order to work on a number of projects simultaneously from inception to completion.
