You will be responsible for promoting and monitoring alternatives to the private car, providing support for the implementation of actions and initiatives resulting from School Travel Plans, to schools throughout Colchester.

The role of School Sustainable Travel Advisor is a vital function within the Transportation, Planning and Development service as it will require having responsibility for securing, developing and monitoring work associated with school based travel planning activity; ensuring that the smarter choice agenda is followed when recommending elements for a School Travel Plan such as walking/cycling and public transport measures.

Required to be mobile throughout Essex (in particular the Colchester locality), with a view to travel by public transport where appropriate.

Some manual handling may be required.

• Liaise with County and District officers in response to relevant planning proposals to ensure that sustainable travel issues are considered and implemented during the planning process particularly in the Colchester area.

• Provide recommendations and advice on School Travel Plans promoting measures to reduce use of the private car, tracking them through the Planning Process. Provide up-to-date information and assistance in relation to School Travel Plans ensuring that every opportunity is explored to promote alternatives to single occupancy car travel, so that Planning Conditions can be discharged and Planning Obligations complied with.

• Assist in the promotion, assessment and submission of accurate data/evidence to meet the Modeshift STARS (Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe) accreditation, performance indicators and targets

Knowledge, skills and experience

• Knowledge of sustainable travel initiatives and/or development, implementation and monitoring of (School) Travel Plans.

• Track record in co-ordinating successful projects with the ability to manage and prioritise own workload to meet specified deadlines and targets.

• Educated to degree level in a relevant subject area, or equivalent by experience.

• Effective presentation skills.

• Excellent organisational skills.

• Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

• Effective negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to persuade stakeholders, including public transport operators and developers.

• Ability to work without constant supervision and take responsibility to resolve issues.

• Experienced user and/or advocate of public/sustainable transport.
