Transport Development Management Officer

Bristol City Council

Transport Development Management Officer

Do you care about the quality of the local environment? Would you prefer to see people travelling around the city in a more healthy and efficient way? Do you see new developments and think “… that could be so much better”? If any of this sounds familiar, we are waiting to hear from you.

The Transport Development Management team is committed to ensuring that new developments invest in safe and convenient walking, cycling and public transport access for our communities. We work closely with our planners, engineers and designers to make this happen. At the same time, we must also resist and challenge development proposals that result in poor and unsafe environments.

We therefore need bright and talented individuals who can work within and alongside the development planning process to achieve our goal of becoming carbon neutral whilst being mindful of the ways in which our physical environment can both hinder and enhance our physical and mental health.

The remit of our team is to demand exceptional new linkages throughout the City for all who live, work and play here, and in the context of substantial housing and employment growth over the coming years. We do this through negotiation with developers to secure transport investment whilst ensuring that new and existing streets are constructed within the parameters of our design, safety and maintenance requirements.

We also work cross-boundary with our partner authorities in the West of England to ensure that future urban extensions deliver effective walking, cycling and public transport linkages to the existing urban area and therefore minimise damage to our environment and the health of our people.

The team is expanding to meet the rapidly increasing demands placed upon it and is therefore seeking individuals who will take pride in their work and deliver for Bristol.

This role involves working closely with developers and architects to ensure positive outcomes in relation to the transport requirements of development, and the fulfilment of BCC planning policy objectives, with particular regard to the encouragement of walking, cycling and public transport use in addition to the considerations of layouts, parking and the safe servicing of development.

You will be responsible for providing technical advice, assessment and recommendations on the transport and movement implications of small-medium sized development proposals. As you gain experience and grow within the team, you will pick up expertise in many different areas of traffic and transport and benefit from the training and support opportunities available to you whilst seeking to take on additional responsibility for larger development proposals as your experience increases over time.
