Active Essex
Active Essex is positioned within Essex County Council’s Public Health service and is the strategic lead for physical activity and sport across Essex including Southend and Thurrock. In July 2021, Active Essex launched “Fit for the Future” a ground-breaking 10-year strategy for physical activity and community sport owned by the whole Essex eco-system.

Active Essex is one of the largest of the 43 Active Partnerships funded by Sport England, delivering significant programmes such as Essex Pedal Power, the Essex Holiday and Food (HAF) activity programme, the Essex Local Delivery Pilot, and major projects with our charity the Active Essex Foundation.

Essex Pedal Power is a flagship project for Active Essex and the Essex Local Delivery Pilot. The Essex Pedal Power project aims to level up the cycling landscape and to tackle cycling inequality, with an ambitious target to distribute over 10,000 new quality bikes to citizens living in the six levelling up areas across Essex.

At the heart of Essex Pedal Power is a desire to tackle the inequalities that mean only 3% of people in Essex cycle regularly. Essex Pedal Power is initially being tested in Clacton and Jaywick, with plans to scale up to Colchester, Basildon, Harwich, Canvey Island and Harlow. Essex Pedal Power will also champion cycling for people with disabilities and long-term health conditions. A key feature of Essex Pedal Power is the gifting of a quality new bike, with guaranteed wrap around support which includes sessions in learning to ride a bike, led bike rides, free bike maintenance, and new community cycling groups.

In Clacton and Jaywick there will be over 1,000 bikes given away to local people who don’t currently own a bike, are less active but want to start cycling, and who live in the correct postcode. 200 bikes have already been given away, with another 500 by the end of August 2022. A new dedicated cycling route that will join Jaywick and Clacton, a distance of 3 miles, is a key part of Essex Pedal Power.

Essex Pedal Power is a partnership of Active Essex Local Delivery Pilot, Essex County Council, The Active Wellbeing Society (TAWS), Sport England, Bikeability Trust, Cycling UK and local stakeholders and community groups including district local authorities.

We are recruiting for the position of Essex Pedal Power Relationship Manager to lead the growth and expansion of this ambitious multi-million pound project for the next three years.
