The highways and transport network is the Council’s most valuable asset, and its successful operation affects hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors on a daily basis. The maintenance and development of the highways network is one of the most practical ways in which the Council can make Lewisham a better place to live, work and learn.
The post of Highways Engineering Manager is a role within the Highways and Transport Service which requires strategic oversight for the full range of highway design, engineering and implementation of highway schemes. This role is to direct, lead and be responsible for the delivery of the Highways Engineering services. Main roles for this post include for leading on highways technical approvals, design and implementation of major and minor highway schemes, contract management, and managing a technical group of officers and consultants.

What we’re looking for
As a key managerial post in the structure, this role demands knowledge and experience in a wide range of areas that include; managing staff, highways technical knowledge, contracts management, working with developers, leadership skills, and a command of commercial and political interfaces that are vital to this service.
You will bring experience of the maintenance and development of a highways network, a strong commercial awareness of the management of highways contracts and contractors, an understanding of the highways industry in London, and an in depth appreciation of the political, funding and strategic context for highways and transport.
