Job Title: Civil / Highways Engineer, North & Mid Wales
Reference: SUS2700
Salary: Grade G: £27,255 per annum
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Contract: 12 months (initially)
Closing Date: 9th October 2019

Base: Sustrans office in Ruthin or other North Wales location to be agreed
Note: This role might require the post-holder to travel and work at other locations as necessary to undertake projects on behalf of Sustrans.

Job Purpose:
To design and deliver outstanding cycle and walking infrastructure as part of Sustrans Design and Engineering programme in Wales, with a particular focus on North and Mid Wales projects. The post holder will be involved in rural and urban cycling and walking infrastructure and street design schemes from conception to delivery to create safer and more attractive conditions for active travel.

Place in Organisation:
The post holder will report to the Network Development and Partnerships Manager, North Wales, working closely with other Sustrans Cymru staff.

Key responsibilities:
Delivery of projects or services:
• To prepare designs for urban and rural cycling and walking facilities, including producing plans, technical drawings and technical reports;
• To compile feasibility studies of cycling and walking infrastructure on behalf of public and private sector partners;
• To work within a multidisciplinary team, contributing with engineering advice and innovative ideas;
• To liaise effectively with other disciplines, clients, contractors and regulatory/statutory authorities.
• To prepare documents required for the planning process.
• To produce bill of quantities and construction cost estimate.
• To provide technical input to the development of community led street re-design schemes to create slow speed neighbourhoods and town centres that encourage walking and cycling;
• To influence local authorities, funders and other partners when designing and building schemes to obtain best possible outcome.

Communication and marketing:
• To contribute towards raising the profile of Sustrans, by representing the charity at meetings, activities and events, as required.
• To support and comply with the charity’s guidance on branding, tone of voice and key messages, positively contributing towards raising Sustrans’ profile.

Training and personal development:
• To attend essential Sustrans training as required by the Charity
• To ensure own personal development by working to objectives set as part of the Charity’s appraisal process.
• To undertake training as appropriate to develop in preferred career path

• To support and comply with the organisation’s policies for the management of Health and Safety including CDM.
• To support and comply with the organisation’s policies for the management of safeguarding.

Working Conditions
Sustrans offers a flexible working pattern that recognises work life balance. Overnight stays away from home may be necessary when participating in projects away from their designated base. Occasional weekend and late working may be required with time off in lieu. The post-holder must be prepared to walk, cycle or use public transport for the majority of work journeys.

Sustrans supports professional development towards incorporated or chartered status through a scheme approved by the Institution of Civil Engineers.
