Principal Transport Modeller

Are you a transport modeller?  Would you like to use your skills to make a difference in central government?

We’re looking for enthusiastic transport modellers to fill two roles:

• Working as part of the Aviation Appraisal and Modelling team to maintain and enhance our aviation modelling capability and scrutiny
  
  
• working as part of the Roads Economics & Modelling team, setting strategic direction for and scrutinising major roads scheme modelling, and supporting the delivery of the current, and future, Road Investment Strategy

Working as part of the Aviation Appraisal and Modelling team, and alongside the existing Principal Transport Modellers, you will jointly manage day-to-day technical operation and development of the DfT’s suite of aviation forecasting models. The DfT’s aviation models have been independently peer reviewed and described as “unparalleled in scale, capability and level of detail.” Ensuring the models continue to provide this excellent platform for policy advice and analysis is a key part of the role.

The Roads Economics & Modelling team works closely with our Strategic Roads policy teams, and Highways England, to help deliver the £15bn Road Investment Strategy (RIS), and plan the forthcoming second Road Investment Strategy. In Roads Economics & Modelling, you will help to set the strategic direction for, and scrutinise, the modelling and appraisal of the largest scale major roads schemes.

You’ll benefit from opportunities to engage with experts in the field, and also from working as part of a wider multidisciplinary community of analysts. Crucially, you’ll help to maintain the department’s very strong reputation within government for analysis and use of evidence in policy making.
