Department for Transport

Planning and Investment Support Manager

Location - London

Salary - £41,587 - £45,746

The Department for Transport enjoys the unique task of keeping the country moving. Incorporating every element of transport from aviation to motorways, we work collaboratively with other departments and stakeholders to ensure the transport connections within the UK are suitable for the needs of the population. With a clear focus on safety and value for money, our work also considers future needs – both those in the coming months and the needs of future generations. The train network is a crucial and complex part of this work, and that’s where you come in – providing your strategic expertise to our planning capacity for the East Coast Main Line.

Joining the Intercity team, you will be tasked with working across a variety of high profile projects such as the future HS2 service and the new digital railway technology that is being implemented by Network Rail. Nurturing rail investment strategies, you will identify the potential within proposed concepts, utilising your extensive data collection and analysis capabilities to build business cases for their development. Identifying ways in which we can improve the work of both the department and the railway line, you will contribute to the briefing of Ministers and you will also produce benefit management strategies, benefit profiles, integrated assurance and approvals plans.

As you will be working with developers to support third party schemes, you will have excellent written and verbal communication capabilities, plus good negotiation skills. With the flexibility to occasionally work away from our London office, you will have a solid understanding of national, regional and local transport planning policy and a commitment to work collaboratively as a team. Able to recognise patterns in data, you will also have the capability to use this information to assess risks and outline potential costs and benefits. In turn, we can offer you a desirable package that includes flexible working (with the option to apply for the role as full-time, part-time or a job share), plus generous leave and pension options.

This is a fascinating opportunity to define the future of this busy railway line. So if you’re enthusiastic about ensuring we continue to meet the future requirements of passengers by planning any necessary enhancements – and you’d be interested in simultaneously achieving a Transport Planning qualification – then this is the role for you.
