Help shape the future of rail regulation

The Office of Road & Rail (ORR) protects the interests of rail and road users. We improve the safety, value and performance of railways and roads, today and into the future. As an Economist in our Railway Markets & Economics team, you’ll get to work on a range of issues and improve the way our railways work.

About the role

ORR is soon to conduct the next Periodic Review of Network Rail. A skilled Economist, you will help to decide the charges that train operators pay to use the network or the incentives that are offered. You’ll also have the chance to tackle all kinds of policy issues relating to Network Rail and ORR’s broader work. In short, it’s a varied role where you can really make a difference. Expect plenty of engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, plus the chance to provide analysis for high-level decisions.

About you

To join our dedicated 12-strong team, you must be highly numerate and degree-qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. You’ll need strong spreadsheet and analytical skills, plus a proven ability to support policy development.  In addition, you must be highly articulate, with a gift for presenting clearly. Strong communication skills will prove essential, especially when working with diverse stakeholders. An organised approach completes a rounded skillset.

We support economists to become members of the Government Economic Service (GES), although membership is not an essential criterion for this role. The GES supports continued development as an economist, for example, through training, seminars and networking opportunities.

We offer a supportive and welcoming environment with opportunities for flexible working and an excellent benefits package including a generous holiday allowance and pension.

Please note that all disabled candidates who meet the essential criteria for the job (as set out above) will be invited to interview. Please email [email protected] if you consider yourself disabled and please do not hesitate to let us know if you will require any adjustments to be made for your interview.
