Environment Manager

HS2

The Environment Manager will lead and manage the process of assessing the environmental impact and associated socio-economic implications of the HS2 project Phase 2B. Develop and manage the delivery of all relevant environmental deliverables to reflect the stage of the design cycle, working closely with route engineering and Technical Directorate to inform robust decision making. Adhering to organisations and sponsor technical requirements, ensuring compliance with UK Environmental Law and Regulation.

 About the role:

  • Lead, manage and monitor the process for assessing environmental impact, and associated socio-economic implications, in accordance with the HS2 Sustainability Policy and Phase 2B Sustainability Plan.
  • Lead, develop and manage environmental input into HS2 Ltd reports, presentations and briefings to HS2, Sponsors and senior management team to initiate informed decisions. Provide robust environmental material to Government to enable robust decision making.
  • Deliver high quality environmental support and advice to the project in order to ensure the best possible outcomes from an environmental perspective. Lead and manage environmental stakeholder engagement, including public consultations.
  • Develop, lead, motivate and manage a small environmental team to ensure they are equipped to deliver high quality, robust outputs and timely delivery within budget and to advise authoritatively and convincingly throughout project development and stakeholder engagement (including public consultations).
  • Manage environmental professional services contracts to maintain high quality, assured external inputs and to provide challenge and assurance that the work undertaken is fit for purpose.
  • Ensure project development is in accordance with the standards, specifications, requirements and policies established by the HS2 Technical Directorate Environment Team and sponsor requirements. Ensure compliance with UK Environmental law and legislation.
  • Responsible for tracking environmental contract expenditure.
  • Responsible for robust audit trail for sustainability information informing environmental design.

 

About You:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant environmental related subject.
  • Membership of a relevant professional organisation (preferable chartered or working towards chartership).
  • Track record of leading environmental assessment and management on a major infrastructure project or within a large organisation.
  • Track record in delivering robust reports for major projects.
  • Proven ability to engage with environmental stakeholders at local, regional and national levels and the local community on sensitive issues.
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant environmental legislation, policy and best practice.
  • Proven team management capability.
  • Experience of managing professional services consultants.
  • Experience of managing third party consultations.
  • Experience of managing and monitoring budgets.
  • Proven Project Management capability.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including effective stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic and tenacious, ‘can-do’ attitude.
  • Ability to work collaboratively.
