Are you looking for an opportunity to make travel by bus more attractive?

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Travel and Transport Group for a dedicated and experienced transport professional who can help develop and deliver a broad range of passenger transport improvement schemes which will make travel by bus easier and more attractive in Surrey, allow our bus services to operate efficiently and effectively and encourage greater use.

As Senior Transport Officer (Projects and Infrastructure), you will be highly motivated with excellent project management skills and have a good knowledge of passenger transport. In this important role you will help influence and shape future use of bus services in Surrey, working closely with senior personnel within Surrey County Council and the bus operators.

You will manage the county council’s passenger transport infrastructure, over 5,500 bus stops, bus shelters, and information points, and will lead on the identification and delivery of passenger transport infrastructure improvement projects including bus/rail integration, infrastructure schemes associated with quality bus partnerships, and bus priority measures to improve the overall travelling experience.

Some of the key areas of work:

  • Management of the county councils passenger transport infrastructure portfolio.
  • To develop and implement passenger transport initiatives.
  • Assist with the development of Surrey’s future public transport strategy.
  • Support bids for transport funding and coordinate the delivery of successful bids.
  • Provide expert advice to support sustainable development and economic growth in Surrey.
  • Consulting with key stakeholders including bus companies, neighbouring authorities and Members to develop and agree new schemes.

In addition to a network of commercially operated bus services provided by a number of bus companies Surrey County Council spends around £8M per year supporting the operation of socially necessary bus services. The current financial climate means that there is an increased focus to make bus services more accessible and attractive, to encourage greater patronage and reduce the reliance on public subsidy.

To be shortlisted to interview your application will clearly evidence:

  • Educated to Degree standard or equivalent work experience in a related field.
  • Knowledge of the legislative framework of the local bus industry.
  • Understanding of how the local bus network can assist with making new developments sustainable.
  • Significant project management experience and successful project delivery.
  • Experience of managing and delivering infrastructure schemes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a range of different stakeholders.

Flexible working supported where possible, laptop and mobile supplied. 24 days annual leave, local government salary-related pension offered, discounted child care vouchers as well as the option to join the car lease scheme.
