Rail Group

G6 Principal Programme Client – East Coast
Salary: Circa £61,855 to £70,859 per annum dependent on experience

Location - London

We want a world-class rail network. You’ll help us create it.

Established by DFT, the Rail Group has the challenge of leading Britain’s railways into the future. We put our customers at the heart of what we do, all while increasing the output of the UK economy by as much as £10.2bn a year. With a £15bn investment programme currently being implemented, now is a fantastic time to be part of our Network Services Directorate. As a Principal Programme Client – East Coast, you’ll have the chance to make enhancements happen, while devising a long-term strategy for lasting rail improvement.

The UK has the most intensely used railway in Europe. Some parts are now running at close to 100% capacity. Network Rail has a mandate from government to improve the nation’s infrastructure. Our Network Services Directorate is tasked with overseeing a major investment programme.

You’ll act as the DfT’s lead client for East Coast route improvements. That means tackling the whole enhancement lifecycle from inception to delivery. It’s important that all changes are fully integrated with operations and rolling stock. You’ll also need to oversee the interface with HS2. At the same time, you’ll develop a long-term strategy for East Coast line. The key is to ensure that passengers and freight operators feel the benefits of any changes. To achieve your aims, you’ll need to liaise widely within the industry. Building strong stakeholder relationships is a crucial part of your remit.

We’re looking for an engaging leader who has delivered projects before – acting either as a client or by managing delivery bodies. Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) allow you to forge links with senior stakeholders. Meanwhile, a head for figures and analysis helps you spot risks and opportunities. This fast-paced role also calls for strategic thinking and commercial acumen. With these talents, you’ll have the credibility to influence and lead a dedicated team. Knowledge of the rail sector would be helpful but isn’t essential. What counts are drive, resilience and a flexible approach.

It’s a unique chance to help create a world-class railway that drives national growth. Join us, and find yourself at the heart of the rail industry.
