This is an exceptional opportunity to lead the development of new models and methods which will set standards both across Government and the wider industry over the next few years.

We are looking for an experienced transport modeller to join our central analytical directorate. This is an exciting leadership role combining analytical skills with the chance to directly shape and improve the modelling and appraisal methods that shape UK transport policy and are internationally recognised as best practice.

Your priorities will include;

• Building the capability of transport modellers across Department for Transport to deliver a challenging programme
• Providing strategic direction to mixed-discipline team overseeing the development of high impact and innovative tools and methods including a new National Transport Model
• Leading regular engagement with senior colleagues across the department and externally to ensure that the work of the team remains relevant to the policy challenges we face
• Building a strong culture of quality assurance which promotes feedback and critical challenge within the team and external contractors
• Line manage 5 direct reports, motivating and influencing the modellers to develop their skills and have a rewarding career

About you

You have significant knowledge and experience as a Transport Modeller with the ability to oversee and lead a team of transport Modellers. You have proven experience in leading complex programmes to an agreed scope of work and with time and budget requirements. You have strong communication skills with the ability to influence your team and stakeholders with decisions made.

Transport Appraisal and Strategic Modelling (TASM) is a 24-strong analytical team which provides technical advice across the Department to ensure that the modelling, forecasting and appraisal evidence supporting decisions are fit-for-purpose. We deliver this by:

• ensuring that the analysis of scheme and policy impacts presented to decision makers is robust, clear and trusted;
• providing leadership in anticipating and building capability in modelling, forecasting and appraisal to meet future requirements; and
• providing expert advice and critical challenge to DfT’s strategic investment priorities and by identifying & addressing issues of broader strategic interest
