The Department for Transport (DfT) is entrusted with keeping the country moving. From road safety to passenger security, trains to buses, walking routes to aviation, we work collaboratively to directly impact the wellbeing of the nation. With our work affecting every member of the public, we need to inform our decisions with credible forecasts to ensure our transport network remains fit for purpose into the future. As such, your role in the Transport Appraisal and Strategic Modelling (TASM) team has never been more important, as each and every decision has the scope to shape policies and investment, to benefit the entire nation.

Working in one of three roles, you will develop the appropriate modelling tools and methods, and guide research to provide evidence supporting our transport forecasts. The roles available are: working with commissioned research to develop the Department’s Transport Analysis Guidance, WebTAG; developing one of the country’s largest models in the National Transport Model Development and Quality Assurance team; and working with TASM’s Strategic Analysis team to create policy testing and demand forecasts and ensure appropriate methods are used for analysing nationally significant schemes and policies.

To excel in one of these fast-paced roles, you will have great communication and team-working skills with the ability to translate complex modelling outputs into easily digestible information for a variety of audiences. With a background in transport modelling or development of large-scale models, you will be able to solve challenging problems with analytical capabilities second to none. Decisive, your leadership skills will ensure the team continues to work cohesively to ensure DfT policies and investment decisions are grounded in solid research and backed by a comprehensive base of evidence.

With ongoing training and development opportunities available, we will help you pursue your ambitions. Furthermore, we will support your work/life balance with flexible working options, making this role as unique as the supportive team who make up our numbers. Together, we can drive the future success of the Department for Transport.
