Salary: Circa £ 40,000

Transport for the North (TfN) is set to be the first Sub-National Transport Body in England and is establishing itself as a leading edge organisation, mapping the way for other regions to follow. The organisation is underpinned and supported by a collaborative Partnership representing political and business leaders from all areas of Northern England, working together with the Department for Transport, Highways England, Network Rail and HS2 Ltd.

TfN is developing an integrated, multi-modal Strategic Transport Plan which will set long-term sequenced investment priorities. The organisation and its Partnership share a vision to improve the frequency, capacity and resilience of the North’s transport system to make it easier for people and goods to move throughout the region. In doing so, we want to create a globally competitive environment that can sustain economic growth for decades to come.

TfN’s Rail Partner - Rail North Limited, brings together Local Transport Authorities (LTAs) across the North of England into one cohesive and proactive body for the purposes of managing the two existing rail franchises in the north of England. It represents the regional and local economic, transport and strategic objectives for the rail industry. Closely aligned to Transport for the North’s (TfN) ambitions, Rail North’s vision is: “To create a world class railway for the whole of the North, recognised by passengers and businesses as serving their needs that supports economic growth and is both more effective and more efficient.” It aims to provide an improved train service through enhanced infrastructure and radically improved rolling stock and to support the delivery of the full Great North Rail Project as part of a wider programme of transformational change.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), on behalf of TfN, is looking to recruit the following role:

The role: Two Year fixed-term contract/Secondment (public sector bodies only):
The Transport Planner use an array of transport planning techniques to develop train service solutions into plans and programs, including scheme appraisal, business cases and funding applications..

What we’re looking for:
The successful candidate will have proven experience of transport planning techniques, along with experience in transport or infrastructure policy and strategy development. The ability to analyse information and evidence to support and inform factual recommendations which enable business case development also forms the essential criteria for success in this role.

The ideal candidate must have dexterity resilience and an ability to prioritise conflicting or extensive workloads, combined with a high level of computer literacy to enable efficient and effective delivery against SMART objectives.
