Transport Planner

The Royal Borough of Kensington And Chelsea

This is an exciting opportunity to develop a career as a transport planner at an authority renowned for the active stewardship of its streets; an important factor in making Kensington and Chelsea such an attractive place. It is a fascinating challenge balancing the powerful impetus for development with the need to maintain the high quality of our public realm, to safeguard the living conditions of residents and to promote sustainable travel.

As a key member of the Development Management Team in the Transport Policy service, you will deliver the transport, traffic and highways input for a large number of the hundreds of planning applications we consider each year. Ensuring that new development does not worsen traffic and parking congestion is a key part of the role. Given that the majority of the borough’s streets were designed and laid out before the advent of the car this is a challenge, despite borough residents having some of the lowest levels of car ownership in the country.

Although much of your day-to-day work will be assessing planning applications, you will also be involved in delivering projects (e.g. car club bay network, development related highways schemes and pedestrian infrastructure) and developing policy, as well as considering proposals under the Highways Act. Therefore you will be involved in a range of transport and development issues.

A sound grasp of transport planning principles and practice, and a flair for identifying the key issues and opportunities involved in development proposals will be an advantage. Good analytical and writing skills are essential, as is a diplomatic, persuasive and confident style in working with developers, colleagues and Council Members.
