The transportation infrastructure sector is experiencing unprecedented levels of investment and Atkins is playing lead roles in projects to upgrade existing transport networks to deliver future demand including major new road schemes, high-speed rail as well as extensive public transport enhancements. Consultants from Atkins and their partners in the supply chain are working with government, local authorities, contractors and private developers to develop our future cities and infrastructure.

We are currently recruiting talented individuals to help deliver transport planning projects for our expanding client base.  With over 300 specialists in our Transport Planning business, we have the flexibility and resources to provide our clients with an extensive range of services including transport policy and strategy planning, traffic modelling, scheme appraisal, travel demand management, scheme design and development planning.

The Roles

We are recruiting transport economists for our Transport Planning business and would like to discuss our exciting range of opportunities with prospective candidates. We are looking for skilled individuals with experience in delivering and managing transport planning projects involving an economic appraisal, business case and cost-benefit analysis. You will work part of a wider team analysing and appraising the impact of transport schemes and preparing business cases to justify the investment.

With a network of offices across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, we are flexible where candidates can be based.  We are particularly keen to hear from those interested in working in Manchester, Birmingham, Aldershot and Croydon. The Candidates

We have opportunities nationwide for transport economists with varying levels of experience and expertise.  Successful applicants will be flexible, self-motivated and will be expected to demonstrate the following:

  • Strong analytical, numeracy and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication with strong report writing capability
  • Ability to work under pressure and proven success in meeting deadlines
  • Confident team worker with ability to work independently
  • Experience of working to time and budget constraints.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate technical skills and competencies commensurate with their level of experience such as:

  • Business case development in line with HM Treasury Green Book
  • Transport scheme appraisal
  • Application of WebTAG and other appraisal guidance
  • Wider economic and productivity impact assessments
  • Data analysis and interpretation
  • Scheme evaluation and prioritisation
  • Spreadsheet/database modelling

Successful candidates will have:

  • Relevant planning, economics, geography, engineering degree or similar
  • A passion for transportation
  • Ideally, membership of a relevant professional institute
