Our Public Realm Division ensures that the London Borough of Hackney is clean, safe and accessible for all our residents, businesses and visitors. Our Streetscene service is responsible for the design and maintenance of our highway network, footways, bridges and lighting as well delivering a wide range of projects to reduce traffic and support sustainable travel.

The Sustainable Transport and Engagement team deliver a range of projects and programmes to support a sustainable and active travel transport system. Our work includes building on the successful delivery of innovative schemes such as the City Fringe Low Emissions Neighbourhood, which provided a package of measures to promote active travel, reshape the public realm and improve air quality. We are looking for a Sustainable Transport Planner to join the team.

Working alongside Senior and Principal Transport Planners, you will join an industry leading team with a track record of delivering innovative and award winning sustainable transport projects and you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects to improve conditions for cycling and walking, reduce air pollution and reshape the public realm. You will work with a variety of stakeholders such as local residents and businesses.

The successful candidate will have good and effective communication and interpersonal skills and be proactive in adding value to the service delivered. You will be seeking to make a difference by delivering our ambitious aspirations for an improved environment, lower levels of traffic and support for sustainable transport. You will have knowledge and experience of transport planning and engagement, project management and leadership ability along with proficient IT skills. Ideally you will have a qualification and membership of, or eligibility for membership of a relevant professional body in transport planning or similar fields.

With excellent report writing skills required for the preparation of reports and consultation documentation and good understanding of environmental and sustainability policy and legislation the ideal candidate will also have the ability to:
• Communicate effectively with service users e.g. negotiations, presenting evidence or advice in a public forum within Hackney’s diverse community
• Liaise with other internal directorates and external agencies to communicate project objectives and/or source information required.
• Understand plans and drawings and other relevant technical information related to Sustainable Transport projects.
• Be willing to attend meetings or undertake work outside normal working hours e.g. evening meetings.
