Why join us?
It’s an exciting time to be part of Gloucestershire County Council. We’re looking ahead and finding new ways to build a county that’s innovative, skilled, prosperous, inclusive, healthy, sustainable, resilient and a magnet for growth. From improved transport links to better internet connectivity, we’re making Gloucestershire a great county to live, work and visit.

To help realise our ambitions, we’re looking for a Principal Transport Planner to join us in the Transport Planning team. At GCC, you’ll benefit from a supportive, inclusive environment, where you’ll be encouraged to shine and make the most of your unique talents. We’re serious about building the workforce of tomorrow so we’ll invest in your skills and empower you to progress.

About the role
As a Principal Transport Planner, you’ll make an impact across various activities to develop planning and transport policies and strategies, and support compliance.

You’ll lead on the development of transport planning policy and associated documents, including all aspects of the Local Transport Plan and its monitoring and review, The Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), transport decarbonisation strategy and associated planning policies. You’ll also lead on funding applications and early business case stages for strategic transport infrastructure, such as our ambition for a Mass Rapid Transit scheme for Gloucestershire.

About you
We’re looking for someone who brings political awareness and holds either a qualification or the equivalent experience in Transport Planning, Planning Policy, or a related subject. As a strategic thinker, you’re able to handle complex work. You have good presentation and report writing skills with the ability to meet deadlines. In addition, you have some knowledge of relevant planning legislation and policies at national, regional, and local level.

To be successful in your application, it’s important that you bring a good understanding about planning processes and researching and analysing information. You also have some knowledge about sustainable transport policies and best practice. As your work may involve some travel across the county, it’s preferable that you hold a full, valid driving licence and have use of a suitable and insured vehicle.

Our rewards and culture
Everyone who joins us is invited take up our very attractive Local Government Pension Scheme. You’ll benefit from flexible working, home working opportunities, and receive up to 25.5 days’ annual leave (increasing to 30.5 days after 5 years, pro rata). You’ll also have the opportunity to buy an extra 10 days’ leave thanks to our Holiday Purchase Scheme. What’s more, you’re welcome to join any of our colleague networks and support groups, support for volunteering work, plus you’ll find mental health support when you need it.

We welcome applications from all backgrounds, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, age, disability, religion, and sexual orientation. We’re an inclusive employer, building a diverse workforce through equality of access and treatment in employment and service delivery. We’re committed to diversity and inclusion throughout your time with us.

As part of this commitment, we offer adjustments to both our interview process and our work environment. This could include wheelchair accessible office space, work trails, flexible working opportunities and adapted equipment.
