Senior Transport Strategy Officer

Buckinghamshire Council

About us

On 01 November 2018, it was announced by the government that the five councils in Buckinghamshire will become a single unitary authority in April 2020. Any changes made to the structure of local authorities in the county may affect council employees in the future. Therefore, the five councils have agreed to restrict applications to this position to current employees of the five councils for a period of 14 days from 21st August to 4th September. External candidates are welcome to submit their application at any point; however, if a current employee applies during this 14 day period, their application will be assessed prior to the council considering applications from external candidates.

Buckinghamshire - one of the fastest growing economies in the UK - is facing an exciting period of major growth. We have a number of Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects underway in the area, local transport challenges as well as regulatory changes facing the authority over the next few years making this a very exciting place to work. The Transport Strategy team is looking for a Senior Transport Planner to help us shape the future Council’s transport priorities and ambitions.

About the role

What will our transport network look like in the future? You’ll help us decide.

Working in the Transport Strategy team, it will be your job to identify what the transport needs of the county are through researching transport trends and data. You’ll use this to provide recommendations, suggest solutions and shape our future transport policies and strategies. By undertaking research and working with partners, you’ll develop the knowledge and insight we need to make big decisions. This could be anything from writing a strategy on the local highway network of the future, to developing a range of cycling proposals, or undertaking community and business engagement on any of several major transport schemes. We are working on a range of Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, including the proposed Heathrow expansion, East West Rail and the Oxford to Cambridge Expressway, making it an excellent time to join our Transport Strategy team.

About you

Armed with a relevant degree (or equivalent) and experience in Transport Planning or Policy, you’ll be equipped to go far in our team. You can develop policy, plans and strategy; and have worked with strategic partners, including government departments. Combining all this with great research skills, a gift for communication and an organised approach, you’ll be as good with people as you are with analysis. A strong project manager too, you’ll have the well-rounded skillset we’re looking for to help secure the future of transport in Buckinghamshire.

Other information

Where our roles are customer-facing and you are required to speak to members of the public, the ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the role.

This is a fixed term post until October 2021.

Salary: £35,249- £37,188
