Director of Inspections - Active Travel England
Location: York
Salary: circa £90,000
Active Travel England (ATE) will transform the role that cycling and walking plays in our transport system.
As the new commissioning body and inspectorate, ATE will drive the rollout and raise the standards of walking and cycling schemes, delivering the Prime Minister's ambitious vision for half of all journeys in England's towns and cities to be walked or cycled by 2030. It is our intention that ATE will, in these regards, perform a similar role to Ofsted from the 1990s onwards in raising standards and challenging failure.
ATE will examine all applications for cycling funding against the new national standards, LTN 1/20. It will inspect finished schemes against the same standards. It will also begin to inspect, and publish annual reports on highway authorities, whether or not they have received funding from DfT, grading them on their performance on active travel and identifying particularly dangerous failings in their highways for pedestrians and cyclists.
You will need a thorough understanding of designing for active travel, with a track record of successfully changing the status quo for walking and cycling in highways schemes.
With a thorough understanding of equality and inclusion in scheme design, you will have strong leadership, communication, influencing and stakeholder engagement skills.
You will be responsible for developing the organisation that will become the authoritative voice on walking and cycling infrastructure. With a passion and enthusiasm for delivering change, you will also have strong political acumen and the ability to influence decision making at the highest level.
