Job description
Hounslow is the West London borough with cranes on the skyline, where development is happening, and the challenges and opportunities for transport planning is immense. You may have passed through it on the plane, train, tube or motorway, but stop and take a look. As neighbours of Heathrow we need to plan for development around the airport. We have high housing targets to achieve, new schools to place children in and need to create opportunities for employers who want to be in our well located borough. A new Civic Centre is proposed as part of the town centre regeneration and Local Plan reviews are currently underway covering the west area of the borough and the "Golden Mile" in Brentford.
You will help to shape the future of the borough by working with internal and external partners including the Planning team, Highways contractor and legal officers. You will have a broad working knowledge of the planning process; be able to advise on good highway and public realm design; and have significant project management experience being able to work quickly and efficiently across a portfolio of projects with minimal supervision. You will use this knowledge to advise the council's Planning team on the traffic and transport issues related to new developments and work with our legal and highways partners to negotiate and manage legal agreements (notably section 106 and section 278 agreements) associated with mitigating traffic and transport impacts of new developments.
You may not be a qualified engineer or planner but you will be comfortable reading through proposals and plans and understanding the potential pros and cons for different road users. You will be able to skilfully communicate your knowledge and point of view to colleagues, developers, councillors and the public through written reports and verbal presentations. Above all you will be passionate about ensuring that new developments play their part in helping us achieve our challenging targets to improve safety and deliver increases in sustainable travel modes.
In return we offer clear career progression linked to achievement of targets, opportunities for further continuing professional development (the borough is a member of the Transport Planning Society and provides support to those seeking to gain TPP qualification) and first class flexible working opportunities.
Closing date Sunday 14th February 2016 at midnight
It is our practice that any offer of employment will be made at the bottom of our payscale
