We are one of the busiest unitary Highway Authorities and this role will be central to dealing with the transport development aspects of a range of exciting regeneration projects within the city; helping to deliver the aims of the ambitious City Plan and Local Transport Plan, as well as assisting with the city’s economic recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic.

About the role
Join us in Brighton and Hove – a unique, energetic, diverse centre for culture in the Southeast and an exciting place to develop your career.

The city places emphasis on high-quality, forward-thinking, sustainable development and travel solutions. As a council we are committed to creating a more liveable city in which residents and visitors feel healthier, safer, more socially connected and included.

As Principal Highway Agreements Engineer you will ensure major developments provide adequate forms of transport for all users, with a focus on sustainable travel and high-quality public realm. You will lead on managing the safety and traffic management impacts of develop-led highway works and major building construction projects, minimising any detrimental effect on the transport network and environment, meeting the diverse needs of our community and supporting the Council’s ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030.

This is a rare opportunity to influence the direction of development in the city and secure long-lasting highway improvements in one of England’s busiest unitary Transport services within easy reach of London. You will also help to shape a new, expanded team to respond flexibly and efficiently to the development demands of the city. As the successful candidate you will have significant technical engineering knowledge and skills, a keen focus on compliance and experience of negotiating legal agreements. You will have a track record of implementing successful quality assurance processes and working collaboratively with others to ensure critical standards are met. You’ll also have a strong customer ethos and excellent communication skills across a broad range of diverse groups.

As a senior officer you’ll work directly to the Transport and Highway Development Manager, helping set the strategic direction for City Transport and development in the city. You will be based in our modern, open plan offices in the city centre and benefit from flexible working, including home-working. Joining an enthusiastic and supportive team, you’ll collaborate with colleagues from a range of fields, working closely with the Planning service and Transport Project teams to deliver transport infrastructure changes across the city.
