About the Job
West Sussex County Council are looking for a Principal Transport Planner to join us based in Chichester with working from home options.

Salary: £43,516 to £46,549  per annum.
Contracts: Permanent.
Working pattern: Full-time, 37 hours per week.
Location: Hybrid working, requirement to be in Chichester at least once per week.

Our goal is to ensure the best care and development of all those within the County. From libraries to multi-million-pound transport projects, our residents are at the heart of everything we do.

In this role you will lead on a range of strategic highways and transport matters working with communities and other partners to help achieve the County Council’s vision and objectives. This will involve providing expert advice and using transport planning tools to critically analyse strategic transport issues and appraise potential solutions.   

You will have a key role in setting direction for the County Council in its role as the Local Transport Authority through; preparation of transport policies and strategies; giving transport advice on the impacts of development; developing innovative solutions such as cycle or bus priority infrastructure; and, preparing business cases and external funding applications.

Experience and Skills
Key Skills:
•Ability to research, analyse and interpret very complex and varied information to make effective and robust judgements.
•Excellent communication skills.
•Ability to work independently and proactively, and manage competing priorities.
•Ability to write sound and robust reports, policies and relevant processes, which are both viable and practicable.
•Ability to anticipate problems, plan solutions and make sound pragmatic problem-solving decisions.   
•Ability to apply project management principles and practices to major projects.

Qualifications and/or experience:
•A degree or postgraduate qualification in Transport Planning, Town Planning or a related discipline appropriate to the role.
•Relevant chartered status, e.g. Chartered Transport Planning Professional, and professional membership e.g. Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation.
•Educated to a high level in broad environmental matters.
•Extensive experience in the appropriate specialist work area at a senior level.
•Experience of strategic level work and business planning.
•Experience of mentoring staff and developing an effective team to work together to meet objectives and deliver a professional service.
•Good working knowledge of technical tools (e.g. transport models, Geographical Information Systems) and techniques used in transport planning.
