Are you passionate about creating safer, healthier, and more sustainable streets? Join our Road Safety Team within the City Transport Service, where we are leading the Safe Systems and Healthy Streets Approach to make our city’s roads safer and more accessible for all.

Bristol is a vibrant, exciting, diverse European City to live and work in. Come and help shape its future.

The City has ambitious plans to deliver improved sustainable transport infrastructure, both in the City and within the wider region. These plans include:

  • Transforming our local communities through the development of ‘Liveable Neighbourhoods’
  • Developing Mass Transit options for the city;
  • Building on our success as Cycling City to further develop and implement a world class walking and cycling network;
  • Making school journeys safer and increasing walking and cycling by implementing School Streets.

The Road Safety Team is committed to achieving the City Council's ambitious Vision Zero target—eliminating deaths and serious injuries on our roads by 2040. Guided by the Safe Systems Approach, we work across multiple sectors to design and implement measures that improve road safety and support the Healthy Streets Approach, which puts people first and creates streets that promote active travel, clean air, and safer communities.

What will I be doing?

As a new team, it is an exciting time as our programme of activities will continue to develop over time based on our research into how we can deliver these aspirations.

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Road Safety Officer to identify and deliver road safety initiatives and projects within the City Transport service area that drive a reduction in casualties.

You will be leading and supporting road safety initiatives linked to our behaviour change, educational, training, and promotional activities, helping to make Bristol safer. You will support identifying and developing new activities and programmes of work that will deliver a reduction in road traffic casualties. You will also support building our policy approach to achieving vision zero.

Your work will embed both the Safe Systems Approach to Road Safety and align with the Healthy Streets Approach, which emphasises the creation of safe, accessible, and pleasant environments for all road users.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead Project Delivery: Develop and deliver road safety programmes, including road safety behaviour change, education, training and publicity activities.
  • Provide Road Safety Expertise: Identify and develop the City Council’s road safety activities as part of the continual development and improvement of the City Council’s Safe Systems Approach to Road Safety, looking for opportunities to drive progress towards the vision zero target.
  • Policy Development: Contribute to the creation and updating of road safety and healthy streets policies and technical guidelines, supporting the City Council’s broader objectives for transport, sustainability, and liveability.
  • Promote Healthy Streets: Implement and advocate for the Healthy Streets Approach, which focuses on improving quality of life by making streets more pleasant, safe, and accessible for all, particularly pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Data Analysis: Analyse and present data related to road collisions and casualties to identify key issues and the opportunities to target road safety activities proactively to reduce both the number and the severity of collisions.
  • Partnership Working: Be involved in joint road safety projects with other local authorities, emergency services, communities and other organisations and stakeholders across the region who have a role within a Safe Systems Approach
  • Cross-Departmental Support: Provide road safety advice to various teams within the transport sector including planning applications and major projects, and the City Council, including schools.
  • Representation and Consultation: Represent the City Council at consultation events concerning road safety issues, advocating for strategies that enhance safety, public health, and mobility.
  • Road Safety Knowledge Development: Build and maintain a knowledge of road safety activities, interventions, Safe Systems and Healthy Streets approaches through researching changes to legislation and best practice.
  • Workload Management: Manage your allocated workload effectively, maintaining accurate records of progress and ensuring project milestones are tracked and reported accurately.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with all Health, Safety, and Welfare policies as outlined by Bristol City Council.
  • Promote equality and diversity in all aspects of project delivery, modelling best practices across the service.
  • Maintain a high standard of work quality, adhering to current legislation and Council codes of conduct.
  • Complete mandatory training as required by the Council, ensuring you remain up to date with health, safety, and safeguarding policies.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Road Safety Proficiency: A proactive approach, with a strong background in road safety education and policy, data analysis, education, training or publicity principles and a commitment to promoting road safety and healthy streets.
  • Holistic Problem Solver: Forward thinking, with an understanding of the intersection of transport, public health, and sustainability, and can develop solutions that balance these objectives.
  • Communication Excellence: Proven ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively to diverse stakeholders, especially in relation to public health benefits and safety.
  • Policy and Compliance Knowledge: Up-to-date knowledge of road safety and healthy streets legislation, policy, and best practice, ensuring all projects adhere to regulatory requirements and align with sustainability goals.
