Job description
Are you passionate about delivering change that has a long-lasting, positive impact on people’s lives and where they live? This is an exciting opportunity to join a high-profile service that has a direct influence on the way that everyone travels around Brighton & Hove.
This role is central to supporting the city’s highest-value asset – its highway network – ensuring it is well-maintained and continues to meet the needs of our diverse communities through the provision of specialist engineering expertise.

About the role
Join us in Brighton and Hove – a unique, energetic, diverse centre for culture in the South East and an exciting place to develop your career.
The city places emphasis on high-quality, forward-thinking, sustainable development and travel solutions. As a council we are committed to creating a more liveable city in which residents and visitors feel healthier, safer, more socially connected and included.

As a Drainage Engineer, you will design, deliver, and manage the city’s drainage network. Provide a detailed programme of drainage works as part of the council’s reactive safety maintenance regime and planned highway maintenance schemes, follow a risk-based approach, and liaise with contractors and site supervisors to ensure works meet quality standards.

The condition of the city’s highway network affects all residents, businesses and visitors, so you’ll be joining a service in the public eye. Your organisational abilities and can do approach will be as important as your communication skills and experience working with a wide range of stakeholders.

You will be responsible for:
• Lead and oversee the design and implementation of drainage projects and repair works
• Manage the revenue and capital Drainage budgets, reporting any issues to the Highway Operations Manager
• Proactively anticipate, consider, and identify improvements to managing the drainage system.
• Procure work through the NEC Highway Framework Contract
• Actively engage with stakeholders, community groups, residents, and local businesses on revenue and capital schemes
• Support the Asset team in improving/supporting how we deliver and maintain our drainage network.

You will be based in our modern, open plan offices in the city centre and benefit from flexible working, including home-working. Joining an enthusiastic and supportive team, you’ll collaborate with colleagues from a range of fields, working closely with other Transport services to deliver transport infrastructure changes across the city.

We offer great terms and conditions including the Local Government Pension Scheme, excellent training and development, generous annual leave and staff discounts.
