Senior Walking & Cycling Engineer / Project Manager

Do you want to be part of a team transforming the future with walking, cycling, and climate action?

We are looking for an experienced walking and cycling engineer with 10 or more years’ experience to join our Witteveen+Bos UK team based in Bristol. Your role will be to lead projects. Depending on your strengths and interests this will include: leading scheme design and delivery, managing client relationships and project teams, and preparing tenders & proposals. You may also have other specialist skills such as road safety, traffic data analysis, developing strategic outline business cases, cycle parking, and/or enjoy presenting at conferences or writing blogs. Please outline in your covering letter what you will contribute to the team and what makes your heart sing! This job is full time and based in our Bristol office in King Street.

This position involves regular regional travel and occasional travel to Scotland. We also travel once a year to our head office in the Netherlands to attend the annual company conference. This is a great opportunity to get to know colleagues, and we will take time to experience the freedom and delight of Dutch quality cycling infrastructure and scrutinize technical details.

As a start-up team of 5 people, our workload in the UK team ranges from feasibility/scoping studies to concept and developed design (RIBA Stages 1-3; or the equivalent highways design phase of feasibility, concept and preliminary design). We are currently working on a number of LCWIPs, a multi-modal corridor upgrade, a walking and cycling masterplan, outline planning permission for a walking and cycling bridge, and providing technical expert advice on cycle parking.

Our clients range from local authorities and engaged community groups to national charities and strategic governmental bodies. Walking and cycling for transport is still a relatively new concept in the UK. Our team is seeking to translate best practice from Europe to the UK road environment, particularly focused on delivering safety for children and inclusive design standards. We collaborate with our Dutch colleagues in Utrecht, Amsterdam and Deventer who are international experts in the fields of regional cycle routes, active green cities, waste water innovation, CO2 & life cycle analysis, nature-based solutions and energy transition.

What we ask
• Masters in Civil Engineering, Highways Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design or equivalent;
• Membership in a professional body or working towards it;
• Experience in design of walking and cycling infrastructure with interfaces to the road/highways environment, public realm or public transport;
• Experience in project phases RIBA Stages 1 to 3, or equivalent in Highways Design;
• Demonstrated track record in project management.

What we offer
• Competitive salary and benefits;
• An attractive career path aimed at personal development and growth;
• Variety, versatility and room for entrepreneurship in our start-up team;
• Cooperation with (international) experts in walking, cycling and sustainability;
• An annual trip to the Netherlands;
• Possibility of becoming a shareholder of the company.
