Head of Sustainable Transport

Shape an exceptional future for Essex’s new communities
Essex County Council can offer a career trajectory that is quite exceptional. Against the backdrop of a shared commitment to deliver great results for our local population, we work collaboratively as a team to support a large local population. From ambitious educational opportunities, through to exceptional social care services, we seek to support our community at every life-stage.
We are passionate about creating a better and healthier future for Essex’s population. Central to that ambition is the need to build sustainable transport measures into all short, medium and long-term plans. As such, we will look to you to champion behaviour change, shape policies and build partnerships with outside organisations to encourage our communities to adopt sustainable measures such as walking and cycling. From better using land in Essex to implement creative travel initiatives, to working with the Head of Transport for Future Communities to explore measures such as rapid transport, you will embrace new ideas and test creative approaches to transport. Whether generating income for your ideas, shaping business cases that will reduce congestion, exploring digital and commercial solutions or liaising with subnational transport bodies that will influence how people travel, you will ensure sustainable travel is being embraced across the council and the community.
This is a far-reaching opportunity to make a tangible difference to how Essex’s two million residents use transport. You will therefore excel in this role if you have expert knowledge of sustainable travel and transport. You will also have:
• Experience of developing and implementing statutory transport schemes.
• Significant post-qualification knowledge in transport planning.
• Plenty of ideas on the delivery of transport, including digital and commercial solutions.
• The ability to bring resources and expertise to test creative approaches.
• Exceptional communication, leadership and influencing skills.
• The capacity to build partnerships both inside and beyond the Council.
• Good financial and commercial awareness.
With a bold reputation for transformational change, Essex County Council is a place where your ideas will be well received. In the past, we have anticipated the need for new ways of working, and as such we have worked collaboratively to challenge old working practices, and to drive better value-for-money. The results have been impressive, and as an ongoing initiative, they continue to filter into every part of the council. The resulting team ethos is quite exceptional, and it within this environment that you will find like-minded colleagues who are receptive to new approaches.
We are therefore proud to say that Essex County Council is a place where your career will thrive and prosper. We have a bold People Plan which sets out our commitment to our workforce and their future, and as such, you can be sure of a progressive workplace which will build your skills and knowledge. With a flexible benefits package that will meet your individual lifestyle needs, plus comprehensive wellness support, we strive to create a work/life balance that allows every employee to discover their strengths and make the most of life beyond the office. You will also experience an ongoing drive to enhance your day-to-day working life, including access to the leadership development programme, plus a genuine sense of camaraderie amongst the senior leadership team. So join us, and do something really exceptional with your knowledge.
