About us
At Essex County Council we’re already making plans to ensure our long-term economic recovery. We’re taking this opportunity to create a greener, more productive and fairer economy that is stronger and more resilient than ever before.

Economic growth is the number one priority for Essex County Council. We want to establish Essex as a great location for the world’s top businesses and ensure that it’s the best possible place to live and work. Our rich mix of urban, rural and coastal economies, and our growing transport links (including an international airport) mean we’re poised for future success.

Our Highways and Transportation team help to ensure we meet carbon reduction challenges in our infrastructure work. This is the ideal opportunity to bring your influencing skills to bear as you tackle the challenges of growth within the county in this wide-ranging and highly responsible role.

About the role
As part of our leadership team, your focus will be on delivering our shared vision for modernising the service, with a particular emphasis on technology and customer engagement. This means developing major transport infrastructure interventions to ensure maximum benefit to road users, as well as delivering strategy at significant scale to maximise external funding and meet our statutory responsibilities. You will also work closely with strategic partners to drive tangible benefits from major infrastructure schemes.

We’re looking for a strategic thinker with the exceptional influencing, negotiation and relationship-building skills to forge collaborative partnerships across the Council and beyond. You’ll bring commercial awareness and a passion to innovate. These, together with your impressive transport expertise, will enable you to achieve some ambitious outcomes.

You should also be educated to degree standard or have equivalent experience with professional accreditation from any of the following: Member of Institute of Highways, Transportation; Chartered Engineer; or Royal Town Planning Institute. Evidence of continuing professional development, and expert knowledge in a relevant professional area will also be key.
