Ensuring national infrastructure projects deliver at a local level

Why join us
Essex County Council (ECC) has an ambitious agenda to improve the quality of life for all people in Essex. Through our Everyone’s Essex strategy, we’re addressing four key areas: the economy, the environment, supporting our children and families, and promoting health, care and wellbeing for all ages.

Effective and integrated transport infrastructure is key to our success. Several multi-million-pound projects are currently being developed by National Highways which have the potential to transform travel within Essex. These include the A12 widening project, the Lower Thames Crossing and the A120 upgrade. Our Network Development team is responsible for ensuring their benefits are maximised for the users and residents of Essex.

Your role
Working as part of our Network Development team, you will lead input and engagement from across the Highways and Transport directorate, from different disciplines across ECC and with politicians on these nationally significant projects. The projects are expected to progress through the Development Consent Order (DCO) process over the coming months, and you’ll therefore have a rare opportunity to gain significant first-hand experience of contributing to multiple nationally significant infrastructure projects within a short space of time. As you’ll be working with everyone from the Department for Transport to local communities, a major challenge will be establishing common goals and building a collaborative, problem-solving culture.

About you
We’ll look to you to bring together a range of skills, expertise and resources to unlock opportunities. Most likely from a transport or planning background, you’ll be a strategic thinker who is able to com-municate clearly and persuasively. A proven ability to research, review and understand technical in-formation and translate it for a wide range of audiences is essential. You’re equipped to build strong collaborative partnerships across the Council and with external partners. You must also be politically astute and capable of negotiating win-win outcomes.

Why Essex?
Essex County Council has a location to be proud of. Our 1,300 square miles stretch from Constable Country to the Thames Estuary, from the dynamic M11 corridor to the traditional seaside resorts of Clacton and Walton. England’s oldest town, Colchester, and two of its newest – Basildon and Harlow – are right here. Along with the City of Chelmsford, the county town, they form our major population centres. It means real choice and makes Essex the ideal place for your career. Read more about us here.

We’re proud to offer an excellent benefits package to all our employees, including a local government pension, flexible working arrangements, generous annual leave and a range of discounts and loans. Find out more about our benefits here.
