The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) brings together the local authorities of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield and the private sector through the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). These bodies together serve the communities and businesses of South Yorkshire. From transport to housing, from business growth to skills, the SYMCA has a great story to tell. We have ambitions to deliver recovery and renewal for people, businesses, and places across South Yorkshire after the COVID pandemic.

We are seeking to appoint an Active Travel Programme Director to lead the development and delivery of the MCA’s ambitions towards active travel. You will work closely with colleagues across the UK regions, supporting the Active Travel Commissioner in realising the regions ambitions in this area. In the role you will help drive the teams’ wider portfolio of active travel projects and support the delivery of our CRSTS programme. In addition the role will also include support our partners to justify and appraise active travel schemes through business case processes and designing high-quality and transformational infrastructure. A key part of the role will be developing and supporting relationships with external clients, often working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

As our Programme Director you will also need to have an understanding of the benefits of active travel and the links to other policy agendas, including public health, physical activity, the environment and the wider urban economy.

We are looking for a dynamic leader, with a track record of championing and advocating active travel who is passionate about sustainable and inclusive travel for all. You will build relationships easily with internal and external colleagues; allowing you to effectively engage and influence key infrastructure and active travel stakeholders on the delivery of projects and programmes. A skilled communicator, you will be able to adapt your style to all levels, allowing you to relate effectively with external partners, including communities, clients, and funders.
