The postholder will lead and manage the delivery of TfN’s research strategy, with particular focus on the economic research programme. You will work closely with the Head of Strategy, Policy and Research to ensure that TfN’s policy and strategy work is evidence led and supported by robust and clear analytical outputs. You will also lead the implementation of the monitoring and evaluation framework for our Strategic Transport Plan.

The role will manage the Northern Powerhouse Independent Economic Review (NPIER) working with partners such as NP11 and other stakeholders, including government departments. This will include specifying and managing the delivery of an agreed programme of economic analysis to support the development of TfN strategy, evidence base and initiatives.

You will be expected to build strong relationships, internally and externally and be able to influence, shape and challenge across the economic research sphere to drive an integrated approach to economic growth, decarbonisation and social inclusion within TfN and with our partners. The successful candidate will develop, lead and manage the TfN economic research programme, including the management of specialist researchers and working closely with strategy and policy colleagues to maintain and enhance our regional evidence base to support the Strategic Transport Plan.

What we’re looking for:
The successful candidate will be a senior manager with experience in economic research in a multi-agency environment. You will have extensive experience of applying technical expertise to undertake research and analysis activities and will possess substantial understanding of the national and regional policy context. You will be expected to deliver work to defined standards of quality, accuracy and timeliness, supporting the team to develop and deliver required outputs.

As an experienced leader, you will be talented in creating positive working climates, establishing clear priorities and ensuring consistent performance improvement.

A track record of dealing with and influencing at the highest levels within and beyond the organisation is essential as is the demonstrated effectiveness in developing and managing complex working relationships with external stakeholders at a national level.

Candidates should be educated to degree level within a mathematical or economics related subject or possess a professional qualification or equivalent experience.
