We are based in the North of England, with our Head Office in Manchester. We also have colleagues working within local transport bodies across the North. We do not replace or replicate the work of existing local transport bodies. Rather, our role is to add strategic value by ensuring that funding and strategy decisions about transport in the North are informed by local knowledge and requirements. This fits with the devolution agenda, and draws powers down from central government rather than up from local government.

Our research has a central role in TfN’s Strategic Transport Plan, which sets out TfN’s vision for the North of England. It also contributes to the development of business cases for major road and rail interventions across the North, and supports Local Authorities in developing high quality local transport networks.

As Social Research Officer, you will deliver research projects and manage external research contracts on key themes including social inclusion, transport decarbonisation, and economic transformation in the North. You will be involved in all stages of the research process, including undertaking literature reviews and working with TfN’s partners to identify evidence requirements, developing research methodologies, undertaking primary and secondary data gathering and analysis, and presenting findings to stakeholders and decisionmakers in a range of formats.
