Job Title: PLA/3086 - Peninsula Transport Technical Director
Department: Place
Salary Range: Grade L (£58,549 to £62,895) per annum
Location: Ballard House
Contract Type: Permanent
Peninsula Transport is one of the seven Sub-National Transport Bodies (STBs) in England working in partnership with Government to create regional transport strategies and implementation plans to prioritise transport investment and facilitate delivery. It was formed by, and works on behalf of, the local transport authorities in the peninsula – Cornwall Council, Devon County Council, Plymouth City Council, Somerset Council and Torbay Council.
Over the past five years, Peninsula Transport has been working to create an evidence base to inform the development of its first regional transport strategy which will be published later this year. The Department for Transport is looking for STBs to play a growing role in the development of national policy and regional investment plans as well as becoming centres of excellence to provide technical and policy support to local transport authorities. In recognition of this growing status, Peninsula Transport is looking to appoint five permanent staff to take this important work forward – two director roles, supported by three project managers.
The creation of a permanent core team is being led by Plymouth City Council, the accountable body for Peninsula Transport, supported by the Department for Transport who will be funding these posts.
The team will be employed by Plymouth City Council but will serve all local authorities within the peninsula and report to the Lead Officer and Peninsula Transport Board. Whilst the team will be based at Plymouth City Council, all members of the team will be required to work across the peninsula and in collaboration with strategic transport providers, the other six STBs and the policy leads at the Department for Transport. All posts are based on a hybrid working model reflecting the nature of the role and geography of the peninsula.
This is a unique opportunity to work with Transport Officers across England at other STBs and with the Department to grow and develop your skills and network. Check out our website for information on our latest programme www.peninsulatransport.org.uk
Reporting to the Lead Officer, the Technical Director will take the lead on all technical work commissioned and undertaken by and on behalf of the STB. The candidate will be responsible for oversight and coordination of commissions, taking a lead role on compiling technical briefs and selecting appropriate suppliers or consultants.
They will:
Support the Lead Officer in preparing, implementing and maintaining the Strategic Transport Plan and associated transport strategies for the Peninsula Transport region.
Work with Project Managers to develop projects, ensuring project sponsor representatives from the Board and Department for Transport are engaged in key decision points.
This role is suitable for flexible working subject to the needs of the service.
