Birmingham is a young and growing city, with over 200,000 children of school age. How those children travel to school has a significant impact on their health and wellbeing and on the city’s carbon footprint and air quality.

Working directly with schools, the Travel Demand Management Team helps create and deliver travel plans and change the infrastructure at the school gate to encourage children and their carers to travel safely, actively and sustainably.

The role
We are looking for two enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our team and help expand our successful School Streets programme and Modeshift STARS travel planning capacity, with the end goal of reducing the number of children travelling to school by car.

Your primary role will be engaging with schools, helping them use the Modeshift STARS system to develop and deliver travel plans and achieve travel plan accreditation. Once schools are registered with Modeshift and working on a travel plan they can access a range of resources and support from the council; you will help and advise them, working one to one with schools and delivering webinars to small groups of school staff.

In addition, you will support a growing number of schools to implement Car Free School Streets, where the road outside the school is closed to traffic at the beginning and end of the school day.

You may also have the opportunity to get involved in other aspect of the team’s work, including workplace travel planning; road safety education; and communication, consultation and engagement on transport projects.

Key Requirements
You will be highly motivated and enthusiastic, able to work well in a team and to encourage and enable schools and individuals to take ownership of their travel plan and deliver real behaviour change.

Skills and Experience
You should have experience of working with schools and other organisations and with members of the public, ideally within a transport and travel context. You will use your excellent written and verbal communication skills to explain the need for behaviour change and to encourage people to travel more sustainably.

You will have education, training, experience and professional development that is equivalent to undergraduate level in transport planning or a related discipline.

You should be able to work as part of a team, but be responsible for managing your own workload.

Additional Information
You will be supported with your continuous professional development. You will also get a minimum of 29 days holiday per year, the opportunity to join a market leading pension scheme and enjoy an impressive package of other health and wellbeing benefits including our flexible working policy, and discounts with some of the UKs top retailers, fashion and tech brands.

Hybrid working conditions are currently in place with a mix of remote working and working from the office. Staff will be expected to attend in-person meetings when required, including at city council buildings, offices of consultants and other stakeholders, public meetings, and on site.

This role will require an enhanced check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
