The Role
Reporting into the Principal Public Transport Officer, you will take a key role in the delivery of aspects concerning the practical operation of public transport in Portsmouth.

Elements of this include:

Dealing with the city residents, elected members, customers, visitors, clients, stakeholders, and PCC staff.

Delivery of a high-quality public transport network that works to achieve the Council’s aspirations for promoting sustainable transport and encouraging modal shift to sustainable modes. Taking the lead on service disruption (roadworks, stop works (RTI & infrastructure), interchange works/maintenance

Concessionary fare scheme enquiries and bus pass rollouts – working closely with the Cashier’s Office team, and instructing our scheme contractor, and public information on the scheme Local Transport Plan project management, including statutory schemes such as Access for People with Disabilities (including installation of dropped kerbs and other highways infrastructure to assist those less abled, to use public transport) and Traveline – used for online passenger journey planning

Managing the bus shelter contract for over 300 bus shelters including on maintenance of existing and development of new shelters. Managing all bus stop infrastructure poles/flags in the city. Managing the Real Time Information units at shelters and key destinations. Manage the day to day operations of The Hard Interchange and Portsmouth Park and Ride, advising the Hard Interchange Supervisor on public transport elements of their role.

What you’ll need to succeed
You need to have:

Previous experience working on public transport related matters, including work experience in delivery of public transport and having commercial awareness of this sector. Experience of supporting procurement processes and contract management such as supported bus services, bus shelter contract, and the real time information contract.

Working within agreed operational budgets and delivery of Local Transport Plan public measures such as Access for People with Disabilities and Traveline (ranging between £50k – £100k).

Building and maintaining good relationships, both internally and externally with outside bodies with regard to identifying and resolving issues Working under pressure to meet deadlines

Understanding the local traffic regulation orders (TRO). Some understanding of public transport planning and its interaction with local and national strategies and ethical and social requirements Understanding of the public transport challenges in Portsmouth

Ability to work independently and pro-actively on day-to-day operational issues, with the ability to prioritise tasks and issues and the understanding of when to escalate to a managerial level. Able to make decisions with support from manager on complex and conflicting issues
