Job summary
Transport is part of all our lives as we travel to school and work, socialise and access public services. In recent decades, motor vehicles have dominated the way we travel, but we are starting to see a shift towards active travel, with the health benefits this brings. We are recruiting to the post of Transport Planner – Active Travel to be part of our active travel team. This comes at an exciting time, where more people are choosing to walk and cycle, and the Sustainable Transport Policy and Carbon Neutral Roadmap have set out the ambition to make it easier for Islanders to choose to walk and cycle.

If you have a passion to be part of the Island’s journey to reduced carbon emissions and better health, have the skills to analyse and an aptitude to develop and introduce new concepts, and enjoy working within a small team and engaging with stakeholders and community, this could be a unique opportunity for you to create a career pathway as a professional active travel transport planner.

The Infrastructure and Environment department is responsible for active travel infrastructure delivery and aims to increase cycling and walking levels in Jersey in line with the Sustainable Transport Policy and Carbon Neutral Roadmap ambition. The post holder would plan and promote active travel infrastructure, such as cycling route improvements, research and develop good practice and work with our communications and engagement teams to promote cycling and walking. The role also involves developing active travel business cases, supporting transport strategy development, supporting mapping active travel routes, developing active travel promotional material, and managing discrete active travel projects, including budget management.

You would need to have the skills to independently organise initiatives across government and with the community. You would also need to be willing to develop technical skills through study and experience on a professional development pathway. Degree-level education would normally be the basis for a professional development pathway and you would be expected, with mentored support, to undertake a fully funded Transport Planning Master of Science Degree by distance learning over several years. Graduates in a relevant subject would normally start at Grade 8 and by developing skills and study, progress to Grade 9 and 10.

The successful applicant with be supported in their role development by the Senior Transport Planner – Active Travel who will provide support and guidance in the day to day work. Support will also be provided by the wider Transport team.

The role is open to local applicants and also applicants without 5 year residency in Jersey.
