Highways Director – Competitive Salary


Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is at the heart of delivering and developing the region’s strategic approach to address the passenger and business transport needs of the area. Our highway network is supported by innovative, real-time traffic management and information systems and we are evolving integrated travel information systems to meet the needs of our communities and businesses. The ground-breaking Greater Manchester Agreement will further devolve powers and funding for transport, strategic planning, housing investment and crime to an elected Greater Manchester mayor.


With over 6,000 miles of highways to oversee and over £200 million already invested in creating the regions smart motorway the role is complex and challenging. You will be working in partnership with Highways England and a range of senior stakeholder groups, instrumental in embedding the new Key Route Network and supporting the delivery of the Transport 2040 Strategy. You will lead on new collaborative highways initiatives and develop the Devolution ‘joint investment platform’ as well underpin up our asset management strategy. The role reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer and has a growing team who will flourish under your leadership.


TfGM is already starting to deliver on its core commitments and promises and as a key player you will need to possess a demonstrable record of senior leadership within a commercially focused environment, able to demonstrate strong technical understanding of highways and robust operational delivery. You will bring experience of operating at a strategic level along with strong business acumen and excellent communication and influencing skills. The role also requires you to influence, support and guide senior stakeholders appropriately managing competing demands and needs linked to the developing regional Place shaping agenda.
