About us
The Planning Policy Team work alongside Development Management and the Investment Team to secure benefits and infrastructure from the development process.
It ensures development is encouraged and facilitated to grow the business and residential capacity in the borough, whilst steered to best effect, particularly for local residents.
The team is responsible for the preparation, adoption, implementation, monitoring and review of the Council’s Local Plan in an environment where development big and small has the potential to make a real difference.
The Transport Policy section has a strategic role within this team in improving transportation links in the Borough through relevant planning policies as well as an advisory role in providing transportation guidance for Development Control.

With levels of development planned and in train amongst the highest in the country, and complex transport projects including an NSIP and others of London-Wide significance, Newham is an exciting and challenging place to plan for.
The team is involved both with policy development (an updated Local Plan is currently under examination) and implementation and monitoring, plus various strategic projects to manage growth, and Principal Transport planners input to this work in their own right concerning specialist transport matters. This is all high level planning policy work requiring knowledge and experience, building on the enthusiasm and commitment already present in the team.
It will give you the opportunity to work on schemes and issues of a career-defining nature - in many ways unique.
You will also engage with agencies such as Transport for London and Network Rail to develop and strategic transport projects and promote sustainable transport through measures such as Travel Plans.
There is also the opportunity to work with various sections of the Public Realm teams to develop the Local Implementation Plan which sets out how the Borough plans to improve the local transport system.
About You
You will be knowledgeable, qualified and experienced across a range of Transport and Transport Policy areas, as well as confident in tackling new challenges and deputising as necessary for the Policy Manager.
You should be able to lead, innovate and organise, while also inspiring and nurturing the talent and interest of other team members.
Please note that a transport or town planning qualification and qualifying experience will be a pre-shortlisting screening criterion.
